Beyond the Verdict

 Beyond the Verdict™

Beyond the Verdict is a completely free resource created for families navigating the aftermath of homicide and violent loss, especially when grief collides with a criminal justice system they never expected to have to understand.

I created Beyond the Verdict after my 21-year-old son, Rylee, was murdered. Suddenly, alongside unimaginable grief, there were detectives, court hearings, legal terminology, victim rights, media attention, compensation programs, victim impact statements, and decisions that had to be made while my brain was barely functioning. Helpful information existed, but it was scattered across agencies, organizations, government websites, and programs. Families already trying to survive shouldn't also have to become professional researchers just to figure out what happens next.

Beyond the Verdict brings that information together in one place, in plain language.

The site includes a step-by-step guide to navigating the criminal justice process after a homicide, practical information about victim rights, court proceedings, victim impact statements, media attention, crime victim compensation, and the realities of grief after violent loss. The Verified Resource Directory allows families to select their state and find carefully researched state-specific resources alongside national organizations, with links directly to official programs whenever possible.

It also includes an extensive criminal justice and victim-services glossary with more than 200 terms, translating the language families suddenly hear from detectives, prosecutors, advocates, attorneys, and courts into words that actually make sense.

Beyond the Verdict does not provide legal advice, therapy, or promises about how a case will unfold. Laws and procedures vary by jurisdiction. It is simply a place to start when you don't know where to start.

I built what I wish someone had handed me when my own family was thrown into this world.

You don't have to search for this part alone.
